SlipJoint Knife Safety Directions

SlipJoint Knife Safety Directions

A slipjoint knife is a nonlocking folding knife that relies on spring tension to stay open. Because it does not lock, it requires special awareness and safe handling practices. Always follow the directions below when using or carrying your knife.

1. General Handling Safety

  • NEVER try to catch a knife with an exposed blade.

  • Don’t pierce anything, especially with pressure.  Slip joint knives don’t lock open Piercing cuts are a great way to have the knife fold over on your fingers.

  • Always treat the knife as sharp and capable of causing injury, even if the blade feels dull.

  • Open and close the blade with two hands whenever possible, keeping fingers clear of the blade path.

  • Ensure the blade is fully open and seated in the halfstop or open position before using it.

  • Never use the knife for tasks that require twisting, prying, or heavy force — the blade can fold unexpectedly.

  • Cut away from your body and keep your free hand out of the cutting line.

2. Cutting Safety

  • Maintain a stable grip on both the knife and the object being cut.

  • Only apply light to moderate pressure suitable for a nonlocking blade.

  • Avoid using a slip joint for:

  • Batoning

  • Drilling holes

  • Prying or scraping

  • If the blade begins to bind, stop cutting immediately to prevent accidental closure.

  • Be particularly careful with tasks like whittling, where force direction can change suddenly.

3. Opening and Closing the Knife

  • Hold the knife handle firmly and pull the blade open slowly using the nail nick.

  • Keep your fingers out of the blade’s closing path at all times.

  • When closing the blade:

  • Push it carefully until the halfstop engages (if the knife has one).

  • Reposition your fingers to avoid the spine.

  • Continue closing the blade fully with controlled, gentle pressure.

Shape

4. Carrying Safety

  • Carry the knife closed at all times when not in use.

  • Use a dedicated pocket, holster, or slip to reduce lint and accidental opening.

  • Do not carry the knife loose with keys, coins, or other objects that may:

  • Damage the knife

  • Cause accidental partial opening

  • Observe all local laws regarding knife carry.

5. Maintenance Safety

  • Clean and oil the pivot area regularly to ensure smooth opening and closing.

  • When sharpening:

  • Secure the blade and maintain full awareness of hand placement.

  • Use slow, controlled strokes.

  • Never attempt repairs if the spring is damaged — consult a qualified technician or the manufacturer.

6. Storage Safety

  • Store the knife closed, clean, and dry.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Avoid leaving the knife in damp environments that can weaken springs or cause rust.

Shape

7. Situational Awareness

  • Stay alert when using the knife around others.

  • Do not use when tired, distracted, or under the influence of alcohol or medication.

  • If the knife feels loose, gritty, or unstable, stop using it until it is cleaned or inspected.
